Canada: Work Permits
Work permits are temporary visas which are valid for the duration of your job contract. The Canadian immigration authorities work with various work permits. Some job offers need Human Resources & Social Development Canada (HRSDC) approval and others do not. To help you find the best fit, we have listed some routes that lead to a work permit.
Job Vacancies
Buysse Immigration is in contact with Canadian employers and job hunters; we have job offers for certain occupations. These job offers will lead to a work permit or, ultimately, a permanent visa for Canada. Even if your job is not on this list, you may still qualify for a work permit. The possibilities are explained below.
HRSDC-approved job offers
If you do find a job in Canada you still need to obtain a work permit. In most cases the job offer, in itself, is not enough. It all depends on whether the employer is required to prove that nobody in Canada can do the same job. If so, the employer needs to convince HRSDC. Once HRSDC confirms a shortage in the profession, the next step is to apply for a work permit.
HRSDC-exempt work permits
There are also professions that do not need HRSDC approval, but still require a work permit. You will find the list in our quick scan form.
Intra-Company transferees (expats)
Work permits are required for Intra-Company transferees (expats). The Canadian company does not need to prove that no other workers are available in Canada, provided the positions are of an executive, managerial or specialist nature.
Live-in-caregivers (nannies)
Work permits are available for live-in single persons who are qualified to work unsupervised in a private household that provides care for children, the elderly or people with disabilities.
Self-Employed and Entrepreneurs
If you have bought a company with employees in Canada and can prove that your short-term input is necessary to make it viable, you may qualify for a work permit. However, this work permit is not a substitute for a 'normal' self-employed or entrepreneurial visa; more information about these classes can be found in our business section.
Open work permits
Separate criteria apply for persons up to the age of 30. These are the so called ‘open’ work permits.
